Imagine if you received new clients just by deepening your relationship with a few key people who are in different businesses with the same target market? Rather than continuously making cold calls and spending time and getting rejected by new potential prospects?
I am a member of 2 bodies that facilitate my being able to do just that. Not that I have reached my goal of working intensively with 8 referral partners. Not yet. But I am on the right path. Before I joined these institutions, I had no idea that this was even possible.
The first one is Business Network International. I am a member of BNI Aurora Dubai, and we have 14 to 18 members from different professions. BNI ensures accountability of referral activity and records it. We meet weekly at 6:45 am and that ensures seriousness.
The second one is the Referral Institute. Here, I am developing and implementing strategies to reach my goal of working with the 8 referral partners from different contact spheres and similar target markets. They have absolutely converted the idea of building relationships into a systematic way to get and give business.
And for me, a person who finds the idea of going to social events very boring, and my least favorite activity, this is ideal! With every person I meet, I can have an objective that will fit into my relationship marketing plan! So I don’t have to think of the meeting as a ‘social’ chit chat session.

In 2010, Business Network Int’l passed over 6.5 million referrals in 5500+ chapters with over 135,000 members in 45 countries resulting in more than $2.8 billion in business! BNI Middle East has 10 chapters in Dubai and 2 in Abu Dhabi.

In 2009 when the recession just hit Dubai, we were looking to find a way to increase sales without spending thousands of dirhams on advertising. A friend introduced me to Business Network International (BNI). I attended a Visitors Day breakfast meeting and was astonished to see the banquet hall of a large hotel filled with 180 entrepreneurs who were also refusing to join the recession!
I was very curious to know more. The joining fee was only AED 4,425 and I felt that I could recover it in one business deal. The prospect of getting to know people from 20 diferrent businesses, and their strategies to cope with Dubai’s business environment was enticing.
So I went ahead and joined. Subsequently, two other people from our company have also joined BNI.

Meet weekly at 6:45 am – We start before the business day and end in time to get to work. The focus is on exchanging business rather than just a cocktail party. The agenda of the meeting covers 20 odd items and ensures that everyone including visitors has an opportunity to educate the members about their own business in 60 seconds and give and ask for referrals.
Only One Person Per Business Category – We ensure that there is no competition among the members for business within a chapter. This is done by admitting only one member from a business category. Thus, all the referrals for that category go only to him.
30 Business Cards – Visitors get an opportunity to meet and give their business cards to all members and other visitors.

1-2-1 Meetings To Know Each Other – Members have the opportunity to spend at least one hour at each others place of business. This helps us to understand exactly the right kind of clients other members of the group need. We also understand each other’s contact spheres which helps in building power teams.
10 Minutes Presentation – Every member of the group by rotation gets a chance to present in detail about himself and his business to the whole group during a meeting. This helps a group members go into details of the persons product to enable them to give more relevant referrals.
Training – BNI trains us to clarify our message, choose the right kind of referral partners, and trains us to form power teams to increase business continously.

Periodic Socials – Members get a chance to socialize with each other to build a bond that is more personal. This helps in building rapport among the team members making them more comfortable about referring their businesses. After all one wants to give business to a friend one likes!
Recording Of Performance – Each chapter tracks the performace of its members through referrals given, business closed from these referrals, attendance, the no. of 1-2-1′s done, testimonials given to each other and any visitors invited.
Visitors – All members get an opportunity to invite their non member friends and business associates to the meeting. This creates an atmosphere of freshness as well as the visitor often feels oblige when he receives a qualified lead referral. He may even be invited to join the group if his category is open
